Home Is A Moving Place

Poetry · Literary Cartography · Memory · Belonging

What does home mean when home keeps moving?

Home Is a Moving Place is a participatory literary-cartography project created by author, editor, literary cartographer, and longtime military spouse Cynthia Jean Brown.

Centered on military spouses and military families, the project explores what Home means when life is measured in duty stations, PCS orders, departures, arrivals, temporary houses, changing communities, and the repeated work of beginning again.

Through poetry, conversation, memory, and literary cartography, participants are invited to consider not only where they have lived, but what they have carried with them, what they have left behind, and whom they have become along the way.

Beginning in the Vicenza Military community, Home is a Moving Place will travel to U.S. and international military communities across Europe, gathering the geography and stories of lives lived in motion.

Where the Journey Begins
Vicenza, Italy | April 2027

Home is a Moving Place begins in the Vicenza military community in  April 2027 during National Poetry Month, in partnership with Ederle Library.

From Vicenza, the project will travel to military installations and communities across Europe, inviting military spouses and families to add their places, memories, and experiences to a growing literary record of life in motion.

At each stop, the Moving Home Map will grow, the Bone Honey Ledger will gather new voices, and participants will carry their own Bone Honey Passports forward.

By the time the project returns to Vicenza, it will hold something that did not exist when the journey began: a collective geography of military-family movement across Europe.

From Bone Honey To Home Is A Moving Place

Home Is a Moving Place grows from the questions at the heart of Cynthia Jean Brown's poetry collection, Bone Honey: What do we inherit? What do we carry? What do we leave behind? What do we choose to pass forward?

Rooted in Brown's experience of motherhood, Black Southern memory, faith, family, survival, and inheritance, Bone Honey explores how memory lives in the body and travels across generations.

Home Is a Moving Place carries those questions into military communities across Europe, where movement is part of everyday life, and home is continually being made, left, remembered, and made again.

The Moving Home Map
Where Has Home taken You?

A growing literary map documenting the places we have called home, passed through, left behind, or been changed by. As the project travels across Europe, each community adds another layer to our shared geography of home.
